A critical care gap exacerbating burden, patient waiting times, and affordable treatments in the vicinity
While cancer care incidences are rising steadfastly, there is a lack of cancer care facilities offering advanced treatments. Especially in Southern and Eastern India, Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC), a unit of Tata Memorial Centre, in Visakhapatnam (Vizag) is the only comprehensive care facility. Patients requiring specialised treatments came to TMH, Parel. This leads to overcrowding, delays, disproportionate burden on patients, especially for the ones coming from outside Vizag and other financial and emotional costs.
The existing services, infrastructure, and facilities are unable to cater to the demands, reinforcing the need for extending cancer care infrastructure. Without that, the quality of life of the patients and their families eventually get hampered.
