Introduction

In the hills of Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya, water scarcity shapes everyday life. Despite abundant rainfall, the lack of storage and distribution systems leaves many villages struggling for clean water, especially during the dry months from December to April.

For families, the shortage means more than inconvenience. Women often travel long distances to fetch water, household expenses rise and access to education and livelihoods is disrupted. What the region needed was not just more water, but a sustainable way to capture and use the water already flowing through its landscape.

Our Intervention

Our solution began with a simple insight: Ri-Bhoi’s hills are rich in perennial springs. By tapping these natural sources and guiding the water downhill through gravity, we designed a spring water harvesting system that works with the terrain rather than against it.

The model captures spring water, stores it in primary tanks, filters it and distributes it to villages through a gravity-fed pipeline network. Overflow water is directed into recharge pits to strengthen groundwater reserves. Because the system relies on gravity instead of electricity, it remains low-cost, reliable and environmentally sustainable for remote hill communities.

Impact

The intervention has brought clean water closer to homes and reduced the daily burden of water collection for 30,000+ people. 45 Villages that once faced recurring shortages now have a more dependable source of safe water throughout the year through 78 springs connected via a 225km pipeline network.

By using the natural force of gravity and the resilience of local springs, the initiative has turned a seasonal challenge into a sustainable source of water security for Meghalaya’s hill communities, with a 4.5 mn litres of water storage capacity.
