Introduction
Home to tigers, diverse wildlife and rich natural ecosystems, Sariska Tiger Reserve is one of Rajasthan's most important conservation landscapes. Beyond its ecological significance, the reserve also supports communities living along its periphery, whose lives and livelihoods are closely linked with the surrounding environment.
Over the years, habitat degradation, water scarcity, invasive weed infestation and increasing pressure on natural resources began to affect the delicate balance between wildlife and communities. Limited livelihood opportunities in periphery villages further increased dependence on forests, often leading to greater human-wildlife interactions. Preserving Sariska's ecological wealth therefore required an approach that addressed ecological conservation challenges, wildlife security and surveillance and community needs, ensuring that nature and people could thrive together.
Our Intervention
In partnership with the Department of Forests, Government of Rajasthan, and the Sariska Tiger Reserve, we implemented a multi-dimensional programme focused on habitat restoration, water security, wildlife conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
22 Solar-powered borewells, 37 new watering holes, 54 new earthen bunds and pipeline networks were created to enhance year-round water availability for wildlife. 3 new grasslands were developed to facilitate habitat for the wildlife. Conservation efforts were further supported through patrolling vehicles, an animal rescue van and renewable energy infrastructure across the reserve. 121 new solar-powered chowkis were supported. Simultaneously, livelihood initiatives including dairy value chain development, skilling programmes and community capacity building were undertaken to create sustainable income opportunities for local residents and reduce dependence on forest resources.
Impact
The intervention has strengthened Sariska's ecological resilience while supporting a more harmonious relationship between wildlife and surrounding communities. Improved habitat conditions, enhanced water availability and restored grasslands have contributed to a healthier ecosystem, enabling wildlife to access critical resources within the reserve itself.
Enhanced surveillance and rescue infrastructure have strengthened conservation efforts across the landscape, while livelihood initiatives are helping communities build sustainable sources of income closer to home. Together, these interventions are reducing pressures on forest resources, supporting wildlife conservation and fostering a model of coexistence that protects both Sariska's natural heritage and the well-being of the people who share its landscape.
