Nestled in the Western Ghats, Bhimashankar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems and as the habitat of the Giant Indian Squirrel. As one of India's biodiversity hotspots, the landscape plays a vital role in sustaining wildlife, natural resources and the communities living in and around its forests.
Over time, ecological pressures such as soil erosion, water scarcity, habitat degradation and human-wildlife interactions began to impact the region's environmental balance. At the same time, forest-dwelling and tribal communities faced limited livelihood opportunities, increasing their dependence on natural resources. Recognising the interconnectedness of conservation and community well-being, we undertook a comprehensive initiative to strengthen biodiversity, restore ecosystems and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Working closely with the State Forest Department, local institutions and communities, we adopted a holistic approach that integrated ecological restoration with livelihood enhancement. The initiative focused on conserving biodiversity, strengthening natural resources and improving the resilience of forest-periphery communities. To restore ecological balance, we undertook soil and water conservation measures through the construction of ninety-three stone structures, including gabions and bunds, supported pond rejuvenation efforts, and developed a 307-acre watershed in villages surrounding the forest. Three dedicated animal pathways were also created to facilitate the safe movement of wildlife and reduce human-wildlife interactions.
To strengthen conservation efforts, we provided five patrolling vehicles, seven animal rescue vans, twenty-six rescue cages and hundred and twenty-four fire-fighting tools across forest ranges. Simultaneously, we enhanced community well-being through livelihood interventions such as backyard cultivation, mushroom farming, poultry rearing and women-led enterprises. Renewable energy and water security measures, including solar power systems in twenty-three schools and rainwater harvesting systems in twenty schools, along with waste management support, helped create a sustainable model that benefits both people and nature.
The initiative has strengthened the conservation of Bhimashankar's rich biodiversity while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities living in its periphery. Livelihood interventions have benefitted over 9,100 individuals, enabling additional sources of income and reducing dependence on forest resources. The introduction of diversified agricultural practices and community enterprises has enhanced livelihood resilience and strengthened local economies.
Ecological restoration measures have improved the health of the landscape and reinforced wildlife protection. The soil and water conservation structures have reduced soil erosion and enhanced water retention, while watershed has improved water availability in surrounding villages. Wildlife conservation efforts have been strengthened through patrolling vehicles, rescue vans and rescue cages, which have supported the rescue of 43 animals. The provision of fire-fighting tools has helped mitigate 47 forest fire incidents, protecting critical habitats and biodiversity. Together, these interventions are creating a more resilient ecosystem, improving community well-being and helping preserve the ecological legacy of Bhimashankar for future generations.
