Programme: Strengthening maternal and child health care services

ICICI Lombard plans to initiate a programme that focuses on enhancing maternal and child health. The direct beneficiaries of this programme will be pregnant and lactating women, and infants in the age group of 0-1 year.

The goal of the programme is to reduce the maternal and infant mortality in the programme area. It aims to create and maintain good & assisted communication network linking the communities, grassroots health workers, transport facilities and healthcare institutions. It also helps manage a flexi-pool financial system (an amount that can be used by community people during medical emergencies) and provide multi-skill training to medical & health functionaries especially doctors and paramedics.

The expected outcomes would be to improve the capacity of the health service delivery system to provide quality maternal and infant care including emergency care, reduced delays in recognising and managing complications of pregnancy and delivery by the health personnel and the community, increased proportion of institutional deliveries and reduced number of maternal and infant deaths.

Activities supported through this programme will involve establishing 24x7 transportation services for the beneficiaries to access health services, creating and managing a flexi-pool financial system at the community level to meet emergency needs of mothers and children and providing multi-skill training to medical and health functionaries especially doctors and paramedics.

The pilot programme will be launched in two blocks of Nasik district - Trimbak and Surgana and will be implemented by Vachan, an NGO with expertise in the area of health.

Nasik district ranks 2nd highest in the state on tribal population and all health related indices (Infant mortality, Maternal Mortality, etc) in tribal communities rate much lower than urban or rural populations. The selected blocks are the least performing areas and access to health services is one of the major issues in these blocks. Bhavishya Alliance (www.bhavishya.org.in) along with Vachan has already a strong presence in these blocks through their other health projects, which will complement this particular initiative.

Bhavishya Alliance will provide programme management and monitoring support, ICICI Centre for Child Health and Nutrition (ICCHN) will provide the technical expertise, and CSO Partners will give strategic inputs.
