DISASTER MANAGEMENT
Programme: Flood rehabilitation
In 2008, India experienced massive flooding in the states of Bihar, Orissa, Assam and parts of West Bengal. These floods caused significant damage to human life, property and crops, affecting more than 2.5 million people in North Bihar alone.
ICICI Bank responded immediately, mobilising funds to help people affected by the floods by appealing to its Internet banking customers. Their spontaneous and overwhelming response was heartening. More than 55,000 individual customers responded, for a total contribution of Rs.30.2 millions.
In addition, nearly 63,000 employees of ICICI Group of Companies supported the cause by contributing a day's salary towards the effort. Several ICICI Group companies made a matching employer contribution, for a total of Rs.106.6 million.
LEADERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
Programme: ICICI Fellowship Programme
One of the biggest challenges the development sector faces is not being able to attract and develop talented individuals who can strengthen the efforts and impact of civil society organisations. In order to create a cadre of responsible leaders for India and to position the civil sector as a viable career option for Indian youth, ICICI Group is launching a fellowship program, a high-profile leadership program that will attract India's top emerging talent, provide them with a two-year intensive apprentice training with a credible CSO and equip them with leadership and management skills through training, dedicated coaching and mentoring.

The amount mobilised is being utilised for the rehabilitation of flood victims in Orissa, Bihar and parts of West Bengal. The programme focuses on rehabilitation as most of the NGOs face resource crunch in this phase, and the initiatives undertaken has long term impact. A strategic decision to support organisations that are already engaged in the task of rehabilitation was taken to ensure optimum utilization of resources. The funds allocated to these NGOs will enable them to complement their existing rehabilitation initiatives, fill gaps in existing activities and scale up the programme to other geographic regions.
Advocacy is one of the components of the programme to ensure a macro level impact.
ICICI Group is working through CSO Partners, GiveIndia as well as Sphere India and its humanitarian partners for this initiative. The program complies with Sphere India's quality standards, in line with international standards for disaster management.
