The headmaster of the local Zilla Parishad school in Kakumanu, Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, a village with a population of roughly ten thousand is a pleased man. The school with approximately 400 students has been using water from the WaterHealth Centre for the last 10 months. The overall health of his students has improved and the numbers of absentee students has naturally come down. The students too chime in and say they are happy to attend school regularly.
Down the road, a 70 year old lady runs a small shop opposite the WaterHealth Centre. She buys the water from the Centre, bottles the water and chills it before selling it to her customers who happen to be passing by. She explains that she buys 40 litres of water at the rate of Rs one for 12 litres at the Waterhealth centre and sells the chilled bottled for Rs 1 per litre. This fetches her a profit of Rs 36 every day. WaterHealth and its ubiquitous centres have managed to touch the lives of countless villagers in diverse ways.
